Mount Rainier is the highest mountain in the Cascade Range and stands 14,410 feet above sea level. Located inside of Mount Rainier National Park, it is the tallest mountain in Washington state.
It is a 500,000 – year - old active volcano that is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. Due to the mountain's proximity to densely populated areas, if it were to erupt, hundreds of thousands of people would be in danger. It last erupted 150 years ago, and earthquakes still occur in the area.
Mount Rainier is also the most glaciated mountain in the contiguous US, with 26 major glaciers and 35 square miles of permafrost at its upper levels temperatures often drop to 10oF.
Historically, Mount Rainier was called "Tacoma" by Native Americans who lived in the area, including the Puyallup, Muckleshoot, Nisqually, Yakama, and Cowlitz tribes. The mountain's natural resources were vital to nearby settlements, and even today, it is still sacred to Native Americans in the region. There have been efforts to restore its original name of Mount Tacoma, but with little success.
The first people documented to reach the summit were American mountaineers Hazard Stevens and P.B. Van Trump in 1870, and Mount Rainier is still a popular climbing destination today.
Although it takes two to three day to climb to the summit, Mount Rainier is surprisingly hikeable, with over 250 different trails with varying difficulty levels. Nearly two million visitors come to the park each year for mountain climbing, hiking, backpacking, and sightseeing, making it the 5th most popular national park in the US.
