Vì nếu không có khe co giãn, bê tông sẽ nóng lên và nở ra, thể tích tăng nhưng không có khoảng trống để nở ra vậy nên sẽ gây ra một lực lớn làm nứt, vỡ bê tông và làm gãy, sụp cầu.
