I remember once we went on a trip to Australia and we toured in the desert. The first morning we got up to clear skies though the temperature was a bit chilly and dry. Nevertheless, the weather forecast predicted a storm. We could feel the no so mild breeze on our faces and we thought the weather man was going to be wrong in his predictions. Therefore, we got on the van and set out towards the interior of the desert.

As the day went by the temperature increased and by noon it was more than boiling hot. There was not a shade where to hide and it was an unbearable scorching day. Then all of the sudden there the sky was overcast and it was pouring. It started to rain cats and dogs. There were loud thunders and bright lightnings. The nearby river flooded and we had to stop in the middle of the road. We were terribly scared. The severe heatwave and the drought that the desert had been suffering for so long came to and end in a few minutes. There was a sheer drop of temperature and with light clothes we felt freezing cold. It was a very unpleasant situation. We thought it would last the whole day, but we were wrong again, in the next hour the sky started to clear up and the rain totally stopped.

We didn't want to venture farther in the desert though and we decided to go back to the nearest town where we didn't mind to feel the muggy sticky weather after all. Once there we started to think about our home back in Canada where we have many cold spells and blizzards in the winter up in the north. We learned that we can't take the weather for granted. It's wild and we can't tame it. The only thing we can do is adapt ourselves to it rather than try to change it to our convenience. We must adapt our holidays and events to the weather.

What happened in the desert after the storm?

Read the following passage and choose the best answer to each question.

Water pollution is one of the biggest threats to the environment today. There are several sources of water pollution ranging from sewage and fertilizers to soil erosion. The impact of water pollution on wildlife and their natural habitat can be immense. There are also a number of things that the average person can do to help stop water pollution.

We should conserve the soil because soil conservation influences water pollution through erosion. As soil is eroded by water, it transfers sediment from the land to the body of water, which is polluted by the chemicals in the sediment. Phosphorus and industrial chemicals can be pulled into water through soil erosion. When phosphorus levels in water become too high, they can lead to algae blooms that can cause massive fish deaths and make water unsafe for human use. The best way to prevent soil erosion is to keep the banks of rivers well-covered with plants or trees. Planting trees can have a significantly positive impact on the reduction in soil erosion.

The oil used to lubricate engines in all types of machines needs to be changed regularly. When the oil is changed, it presents a number of environmental hazards if not disposed of properly. When a leaky engine releases this oil into the street, it runs to the sewer and makes its way into waterways.

Wherever you see a lot of human recreation, you will almost always see lots of evidence of human use. Wrappers, bottles and other trash are unfortunately a common site at many well-used beaches and rivers around the world. It should be fairly obvious that the trash from these places often ends up in waterways and can cause pollution. Plastics are an especially big issue when it comes to water contamination at beaches and waterways. Picking up litter wherever you find it is honestly the best, fastest way to do your part to stop this type of water pollution.

Organize cleaning parties with local people to make the reach larger. Get businesses involved as sponsors who will donate prizes to the person who collects the most trash if you're having a hard time finding people to sign up to help.

It is estimated that the consumption of plastic by humans is between 250 and 300 million tons a year. About 80% of the plastic in the oceans came from the land. Using alternatives to plastics or using "less disposable" plastics whenever possible can have a surprising impact on ocean pollution. The fact that plastic is cheap and useful for different purposes makes it obvious choices for many people.

Soil erosion can lead to water pollution because _______.

The English say "Other countries have a climate, in England we have weather". It happens because the weather changes more often than in other countries. British winters are mild and springs are cool because of the winds that blow from the Atlantic Ocean. They blow 2 days out of every 3.

In spring sunshine and showers follow each other so often during the day that an umbrella or a raincoat is absolutely necessary in England. The weather changes so frequently that it is difficult to forecast. It is not unusual for people to complain that the weathermen were wrong.

The weather in spring is generally mild but sometimes the days are really fresh. Spring is the season when nature awakens from its long winter sleep: the temperature grows, the sky becomes blue, and the sun grows warmer. Everything is full of new life again. The days grow longer and warmer; the ground gets covered with green grass.

Summer is the hottest season in England. The sunrays become hot, the days are long, and the nights are short and warm. It's time for holidays, when people go to the seaside for sunbathing and swimming. It usually gets hot in July. The summer nights are short, but they are wonderful.

As for autumn it isn't so nice. It's a season of winds and beautiful sunsets. The leaves turn yellow and reddish and fall to the ground and the birds migrate to warm countries. In autumn the days become shorter. A spell of sunny weather in September is called Indian summer or "Golden Autumn". In England September and October are warm and dry, but November is the foggiest month. Late autumn is generally an unpleasant season. Everything begins to take a different colour. The trees look bare. The sky is full with low clouds. Everything looks gloomy.

In England they can hardly forecast their weather in winter. Sometimes it rains and sometimes it snows. They will never know what the weather is going to be like. Children in England rarely go skating because the rivers never freeze there. Winter in England is much colder than winter here in our country. It never snows here in Bahrain.

What does the saying “Other countries have a climate in England we have weather." mean?
