Vietnamese Lunar New Year is the most important celebration in Vietnamese culture. It celebrates the arrival of spring based on a lunisolar calendar. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Vietnamese calendar until at least the third day. Many Vietnamese prepare for Tet by cooking special holiday food and cleaning the house. These foods include chưng cake, dày cake, and sticky rice. Many customs are practiced during Tết, such as visiting a person's house on the first day of the new year, ancestor worship, wishing New Year's greetings, giving lucky money to children and elderly people, and opening a shop. Tet is also an occasion for pilgrims and family reunions. They start forgetting about the troubles of the past year and hope for a better upcoming year.
Tet is the most well-known holiday in Vietnam. It is celebrated all over the country. It mostly goes on for 3 days: 1st, 2nd and 3rd of January - Lunar Calendar.
Before Tet, people who work far away from home go back to join their family for the holiday. People clean up their houses, decorate it with Mai and Dao blossom, as well as other bonsais.
On Tet holiday, people cook feasts with various dishes to show dedication to their ancestors. A dish of 5 different kinds of fruit is also put on the altar as a tradition.
People go to relatives' and friends' places to wish them good luck, prosperity and health. Children are always excited since they will get their "salary" - lucky money in the red envelope on this occasion.
Tet is the oppoturnity for everyone to gather with their family, to rest after a long hard-working year, to refresh and prepare for a brand new year of greatness and happiness.
